GenerationResearch – Inspiring the next generation of mouse technologists
This summer the Mary Lyon Centre and National Mouse Genetics Network funded two summer studentship positions for undergraduate students early in their scientific career to go and work in animal technology support roles. The Network has also funded two paid Masters by Research studentships that will look at cross-cluster data pipelines, analysing home cage monitoring datasets. These positions have been used to support a widening access approach to inspiring the next generation of mouse technologists and scientists and have been offered in partnership with GenerationResearch.
GenerationResearch provides practical solutions to empower sustainable diversity in science by providing authentic, stipended or paid summer studentship placements for undergraduates, Masters scholarships, and PhD scholarships, in STEM subjects to engage talented UK students from underrepresented groups.
Aaliyah, one of the students who spent the summer completing an audit of the biosecurity status of the Mary Lyon Centre, commented, “I’m so grateful to the amazing people at the Mary Lyon Centre for welcoming me on-site and being so open to showing a student the ground-breaking science they are a part of. Going forward, I’m excited to apply my newfound knowledge and confidence to my own research projects as I enter Stage 3 of my integrated Master’s. Thank you also to GenerationResearch for this invaluable experience.”
You can now find GenerationResearch LinkedIn and Twitter pages to keep up with all their news. You’ll also be able to keep up with what the NMGN students are doing and find out about cross-cluster training opportunities.
We also hosted two summer studentships at the Mary Lyon Centre last year, for which we wrote this report.
